A Conversation With SIR PAUL McCARTNEY: BBC Radio 4 Kaleidoscope
Proud of this one from 1997. I remember the day well: me, McCartney and his press agent congregating in the Broadcasting House lobby, heads turning. Then a swift elevator to the fifth floor studio sharing with a BBC post-boy who got in on the second and whose jaw nearly hit the floor when McCartney said hi.
All this – a Kaleidoscope Special – was riding on the back of two features for The Independent and a whole lot of trust-gathering between the former Beatle and myself (a fellow Liverpudlian); he’d asked for a CLASSICAL music journalist in the first place and a whole lot of history came rushing back when I remembered sitting down to listen to the Sgt Pepper album with my Dad on the day that it was released. Gulp.
In the quiet of the studio I sat opposite the great man once more only to peer through the glass into the control room where it was shoulder to shoulder standing room only. No pressure.
